If you’re looking for an enjoyable way of exercising and working out, might we be so bold as to suggest CrossFit. CrossFit is one of the most popular training protocols in existence today, and it also happens to be one of the most physically demanding. If you’re serious about CrossFit, and you give each and every WOD (that’s CrossFit jargon for workout, meaning ‘workout of the day’) 100% effort, you’ll reap the rewards. CrossFit is the ultimate way of training for functionality, strength, fitness, agility, mobility, power, and weight loss. Needless to say, it is not easy to do. If you’re thinking of taking up CrossFit, here are 4 things you need to know before you begin.

You don’t have to be fit to begin CrossFit

When we read about CrossFit online, or see documentaries on the subject, the majority of people featured are super fit with abs you could grate cheese on. CrossFit is a great way of getting fit, but please do not think that you must be super fit to begin. CrossFit is inclusive of everybody, regardless of your fitness levels. There are different classes for people of varying levels of fitness, so don’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end.

You have no idea what you’ll be doing in advance

With some fitness classes, you do the same workout routines week in and week out, so you can prepare to some degree, as you’ll know what to expect. With CrossFit, no two workouts are the same. Workouts are known as workouts of the day, or WODS for short, as they’re unique for that specific day. Each time you begin a WOD you have no idea which exercises and movements you’ll be doing. One day you could be doing strength and conditioning, whereas the next you might be working on your endurance. Basically, you have no idea what your instructor will have in store for you.

All CrossFit boxes are different

Before we go any further, a CrossFit gym is known as a box, so when people mention CrossFit boxes, they’re talking about the buildings that the workouts are performed in, not actual boxes. The thing to remember is that all boxes are different. Some are designed with strength and power in mind, whereas others are designed to help emphasize more in the way of conditioning and fitness. From coaching methods to the equipment available, all CrossFit boxes are different, so be sure to check your local one out before you commit financially long-term.

Consistency is key

If you’re guilty of skipping days, or even weeks at the gym at a time, you need to be sure that you can commit to CrossFit long-term. Consistency is vital when it comes to CrossFit. Missing just one class will set you back, and if the rest of the group is progressing and getting fitter and better, the last thing you’ll want will be to be left behind as everyone else is getting fitter.
